Problem with keyboard shortcuts

I have recently upgraded my Mac to Yosemite, and downloaded the 2015 Draftsight program. Since then i have had trouble with my keyboard.

When i type in a shortcut it will very rarely register, i will have to move my cursor over the command window and click before i start to type. Pressing esc to get out of a command rarely works either and i find i can only get out by right clicking on my mouse, even though my setup has a right click to 'repeat last command'. When i do this however it will delete whatever i have selected and so i will then need to use 'command z' to get back to where i wanted. So normally 2-3 steps are needed to do what the esc key should. As you can imagine this is very irritating .

The keyboard seems to be secondary to everything else which really hinders the speed i work at. Is there anything i can do so that a keyboard command will override anything else that's happening in Draftsight?

I would appreciate any advice

Thank you

Carl
