Long time AutoCad user

IS there a special way you need to save a DS drawing so when selected to open it shows what the drawing has in the preview window instead of a blank or corner of the drawing?

I always zoom to extents then save the drawing (AutoCad Habbit) but this has no effect on what is shown in the preview window when selected to open. Is there some hidden setting that needs to be turned on? 

Does it have something to do with the world coordinate system?
