I am still a novice. My observations and methods are very likely flawed. Please advise if you see anything less than precise. Thanks.
The Extend command seems to have a quirk? To demonstrate this quirk:
1) Draw either a Circle or an Ellipse,
2) Near the center of the object, overlay a vertical line that extends beyond the object boundaries.
3) Offset a duplicate line a small distance to the right of the first line.
4) Cut away (scissor icon) the right side of the object using the first line.
5) Extend the now cut object's bottom section to the 2'nd line. >> No problem.
6) Extend the bottom section all the way around to the top crossing of the 2'nd line. >> No problem.
The quirk: I have been unable to close the Circle or Ellipse no matter how I draw the line used as the boundary edge. An error of "Entity does not intersect an edge." is reported on the command line. The inability to close an open circle or ellipse prevents hatch filling with a solid.
Is there a way to close the object other than duplicating it?
------------
The easiest duplication method I have found is to place the open object in a "temp" layer. (Perhaps layer 0 if you don't use layer 0.) Then using Entity Snap - Quadrant, it is only a few clicks to accurately reproduce the circle or ellipse.

The Layer behavior descriptions in the Help (User Manual) concerning frozen and locked status seem to be less than complete, in my opinion.
Help path: Formatting the Drawing >> Layer Tools >> Locking Layers
"When you lock a Layer, you cannot select or modify entities on the Layer."
My habit of using the keyboard short-cut "Ctrl-a" to "select all" in various other applications is an accident waiting to happen if the above is taken literally. If the other layers are "frozen" ... Ctrl-a ignores them. If they are merely "Locked" ... their contents get selected even when you are working in another layer and even when the other layers are not visible. I often use Notepad as a temp buffer for text and I like to clean up using Ctr-a, delete. In DraftSight mistakenly deleted items are restored using a simple undo command if observed before the undo buffer gets overwritten.
An easy select method was mentioned in another thread in this forum. Using "smartselect" to select all in a layer is very efficient.
A possible enhancement to consider is having a dialog box open and prompting the user to check off which layers they want to use. The established and common command Ctrl-a does not select items not visible in other applications which I have familiarity.
