Error 1327 invalid drive on installation

I have been getting the above error when trying to install saying "Error 1327:Invalid drive U:\\". There are a few other posts referencing the same error with replies all suggesting to check the registry settings:

I have checked the registry settings and some of them do refer to folders on the U: drive but this is correct; that is where those files and folders are and should be. I can navigate to the U: drive in Windows file explorer and have write permissions to them. So the suggestions to check and "correct" those entries take me no further forward. My U: drive is a network location but synchronised locally.

Can someone tell me explicitly which folder the installation is looking for, why it doesn't like the reference to the U: drive, and what I can do about it?

If I temporarily change the folder (once I know which one is causing the problem) for the installation (say to a C: drive location), can I change it back again (to the U: drive) or will that cause problems during use?
