Working with a drawing prepared by others I have discovered it contains some large groups (large nbr of entity members). For my purposes I need to edit these groups to change membership or not use the group mechanism altogether for some members. However, all the groups are unnamed - 21 unnamed groups. Technically, they have hidden system-generated names of the form "*A99" which show in the CLI cmd EntityGroup pop-up pane with "Show unnamed" checked. The Catch 22 is this:
The entry path for editing is either by name or by (I think) GUI selection. With command state cleared, I can GUI select a group, I get the multi-object visual group selection as expected, but no available properties display tells me the group name. _GETPROPERTIES (GUI or CLI) result does not list group membership names. OK, try GUI Edit EntityGroup, mouse over model space lights up groups, select a group, and... wait for it... "1 found. Entity is not EGroup Member." At this point at the CLI one can get to a popup list of group names to select from for editing, but, CATCH 22, I don't know its name. The CLI EntityGroup pane has a Highlight function that presumptively visually identifies selected-list-item group members but it does not seem to work. In any case, using that mechanism for a long list is very tedious.
Q: How to identify a group for editing when you don't know its name and the GUI object selection feature is broken?
