Dimension Text: Moving Text to Opposite Side of Extended Dimension Line

When using the linear dimension command and text will not fit between the extension lines the dimension is automatically placed on an extension of the dimension line.  I should add that my DimensionStyles are set up for horizontal dimensions only.  My first problem is with vertical dimensioning.  Depending on what order the points for a vertical dimension are selected the extended dimension line will either be placed to the left or the right of the main dimension line.  There are many times in this situation when I would like to move the text with dimension line extension to the other side of the main dimension line from where it was automatically placed i.e. if it was placed on the left (0.250--| ) I would like to slide it to the right ( |-- 0.250).  I can not for the life of me find a command or setting to do this.  This is also common when dimensioning a diameter, to the right of the vertical centerline of the circle the dimension text will be placed to the right of the leader and to the left of the vertical centerline of the circle the dimension text will be placed to the left of the dimension line.  Sometimes, for neatness, you just want it the other way around.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ralph
