Is there a way to count created icons/objects?

We layout large systems in buildings with multiple devices.  We create icons to represent the devices, generally a square or a polygon with a letter inside.  Then we print out page and hand count individual icons.  it seems there should be a way to count the icons, but i am unaware how.
