Can I update a layer on a new drawing from an old one?

I'm a network engineer - not a draftsman, so go easy on me!  :)

My facilities manager keeps facilities drawings in AutoCAD.  I can open them and read them in DraftSight just fine.

I have taken his drawing, created a new layer called "Network" and I document the number and location of each network jack on that drawing.  This is a large facility, two bldgs side by side each about 400ft x 150ft.  Managers are constantly wanting cube areas reconfigured to add new employees, or whatever.  The facilities manager will then update his master drawing, but he won't use the modified drawing with the network layer in it.  He will send me that new drawing if I ask.  But I don't have time to re-enter 800-900 network jacks each time.  I would like to take my network layer from a previous drawing and overlay it onto the new master that he sends, then update the newly remodeled areas.

I have searched, but I cannot find anyway to transfer a layer from one drawing to another - is it possible?

Thanks in advance,

Gary
