Enhancement Request: Bounding Box Measurements Directly in the Model View in CATIA Cloud

Customer Scenario and Requirement

The customer uses CATIA Cloud and needs to perform measurements similar to those shown in the reference image.

Reference image provided by the customer, showing the required bounding box and overall Length, Width, and Height dimensions.

The customer uses this type of measurement as a reference because they need to provide this dimensional information to their own customers. Specifically, they require the overall dimensions of a model based on a bounding box, with the dimensions displayed directly in association with the model and bounding box visualization.

Alternatives and Tests Evaluated

We evaluated various alternatives available on the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform and in CATIA in an attempt to reproduce the result requested by the customer.

1. 3DPlay and 3D Navigate

We tested the measurement capabilities available in 3DPlay and 3D Navigate. However, these applications do not provide the specific bounding box measurement workflow required by the customer.

They do not display the overall Length, Width, and Height dimensions directly associated with a bounding box around the model, as shown in the reference image.

2. CATIA Macro

We also attempted to reproduce the requested process using a CATIA macro.

However, the macro could not be successfully applied to assemblies, which is a requirement for the customer's workflow.

 Furthermore, the macro does not behave as expected with some of the naming conventions used by the customer for certain parts.

An example of the macro and its behavior regarding these naming conventions is shown in the corresponding image.

CATIA macro test displaying calculated dimensions fixed around a single part that lacks a bounding box.

CATIA macro script showing errors related to client naming conventions and the inability to apply the workflow to assemblies.

3. CATIA Bounding Box

We also evaluated the Bounding Box functionality available in CATIA.

Although this functionality allows users to obtain bounding box measurements, the results are provided in a table or export format, such as Excel, as shown in the corresponding image.

CATIA Cloud bounding box functionality, displaying dimensions as text rather than presenting them directly within the 3D model view.

Bounding box dimensions exported from CATIA to an Excel spreadsheet.

However, this does not meet the customer's requirement, as the expected result is to have the bounding box and its dimensions displayed directly in the model view, similar to the reference shown in the first image.

Current Limitation

Based on the tests performed, none of the available alternatives was able to reproduce the workflow requested by the customer in CATIA Cloud.

This limitation is particularly relevant for workflows involving both parts and assemblies, where the customer needs to obtain the overall bounding box dimensions and view them directly on the model.

Enhancement Request

We would like to request an enhancement to CATIA Cloud to provide native functionality for creating and measuring a bounding box directly within the 3D model view.

Ideally, the functionality should allow the user to:

  • Generate a bounding box around a selected part or assembly;
  • Measure the overall Length, Width, and Height;
  • Display these dimensions directly on or around the bounding box;
  • Provide a visual representation similar to the one shown in the initial reference image;
  • Support both individual parts and assemblies.

Expected Outcome

The expected behavior is for the user to be able to select a part or assembly in CATIA Cloud and generate a bounding box with its overall dimensions displayed directly in the 3D view.

This would allow the customer to obtain the required dimensional information directly within CATIA Cloud, without relying on external applications, manual workarounds, or exported tables.
