Touch ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿ‘ˆ, a fundamental human sense, enables interaction with the physical world by allowing objects to detect each other through force transfer. Since the governing equations of solid mechanics don't account for these interactions, we use contact modeling to accurately capture these effects.

SIMULIA-Abaqus is capable of modeling contact in various ways, one of which is:

In Abaqus, โ€œsurface-to-surface contactโ€ refers to the interaction between the surfaces of different bodies or parts in a finite element analysis (FEA) model.ย
This type of contact simulation considers factors such as friction, sliding, separation, or penetration between surfaces. Instead of focusing on contact behavior at a node or point level, surface-to-surface contact emphasizes the interaction between larger surface areas.ย
This approach is particularly useful when the overall behavior of the interacting surfaces is more critical than detailed, localized interactions.

In the pictures below, I have modeled the Pin & Lug connection using surface-to-surface contact formulation.
