Wind and Drivetrain Simulation — Overview and R&D Update Aerodynamics and Aeroacoustics of Duct Wind Turbines for Urban Environments | Wind & Drivetrain Conference 2022

I am pleased to invite you to watch my presentation that I held at the 5th Wind & Drivetrain Conference on April 6, 2022.

My Name is Francesco Avallone, and I work at Delft University of Technology. I have been supporting the wind energy sector since 2014 when I started working on turbulent boundary layer trailing edge noise mitigation with innovative trailing edge serrations. Now my research interest within the wind energy field have expanded to innovative noise reduction technologies, vertical axis wind turbines and ducted wind turbines.

Abstract:

Ducted Wind Turbines are a potential technological solution to increase wind energy production in urban environment, where the presence of buildings disturbs the flow uniformity resulting in lower wind speed with larger turbulent fluctuations. Since they are installed close to urban areas, they are subject to noise regulations, then an aeroacoustics study is necessary.

In this presentation, the aerodynamic and the aeroacoustics fields of Ducted Wind Turbines with different duct geometries and operating under different inflow conditions and angles of attack are investigated using the PowerFLOW solver.
