There have been issues reported on Abaqus/CAE becoming unresponsive when volume fraction tool is invoked for certain Eulerian models. The issue has been found to be caused by small geometric features (like small edges) present in the geometry.  If the geometry feature sizes are below the recommended size limit ( 1e-3 units) then the workaround is to increase the model size by scaling and then calculating the volume fraction.
