TU Hamburg: Dispersion Engineered Photonic Waveguide Mirrors | EuroCentral RUM 2021

RUM2021 RUM2021-EuroCentral CST Studio Suite

Abstract:

Designing an optical resonator in integrated silicon waveguides requires Bragg grating reflectors with high reflectivity and controlled dispersion. We use CST Studio Suite to engineer such waveguide mirrors. The eigenmode solver allows us to get insights into the band gap opening and band gap position for various mirror designs and feature sizes. Chirping these feature sizes throughout the Bragg grating allows us to achieve the desired dispersion and high reflectivity, which we check with the frequency domain solver. Dispersion of the reflectors can be obtained from the phase information of the reflected mode.

Hendrik Preuss is a PhD student at the Hamburg University of Technology at the Institute of Optical and Electronic Materials where he works on integrated silicon photonics devices. His specialization is integrated photonic crystal mirrors with high reflectivity. He graduated from Hamburg University of Technology as Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in 2018. During his studies he took part in an exchange program to Singapore which included an internship at Siemens Medical Instruments Ltd. Pte. where he worked on hearing aids. During his free time he loves to play underwater rugby, spend time in his workshop or go on a trip with his old-timer camper.
