Towards Digital Wind Turbine Noise Certification | Wind & Drivetrain Conference 2022

  ↵

I am pleased to invite you to watch my presentation that I held at the 5th Wind & Drivetrain Conference on April 6, 2022.

My name is Wouter van der Velden, and I work at Dassault Systèmes in the Netherlands. I have been supporting the wind energy sector since 2012. I hold a Ph.D. in Aeroacoustics from the Delft University of Technology, and studied computational aeroacoustics’ methods in close colloboration with Siemens Wind Power.
I joined Dassault Systèmes about five years ago. I am currently focusing on managing the increase of part of the SIMULIA portfolio and accelerating sales for the Infrastructure, Energy & Materials, and Marine & Offshore industries.

Abstract:
This presentation describes high-fidelity, 2.5D unsteady simulation results from a Lattice-Boltzmann-based solver, applied to an advanced post-processing algorithm to extract the downwind noise emission of a full-scale, serrated wind turbine at dweller location. Multiple fluid flow simulations of blade sections, with and without serrations, have been performed to extract the transient aeroacoustic data. This data is manipulated to consider its local radial position and rotation and further used to predict the far-field noise analysis. After Ffowcs Williams and Hawking's calculation in the frequency domain, with a radial set of microphones including ground effect, noise signals are merged, ruralized, and corrected for atmospheric absorption and Doppler effects. The resulting signal and spectra fit the IEC 61400-11 certification requirements. A demo involving the unserrated and serrated NM80 turbine concludes this study.
