1. Abaqus/CAE plug-in to generate a spur or helical gear

Simpack can perform rigid or flexible gear analysis. In order to perform flexible gear analysis, the Abaqus finite element model is required to generate a flexible body for the gear. An Abaqus/CAE plug-in for this purpose is attached below. The plug-in requires gear parameters similar to those required for the Simpack gear wheel primitive. Currently, micro-geometry, bevel angle, and backlash are not supported in this plug-in.

2. Isight-Simpack Integration to Optimize Simpack Simulation

Isight provides a suite of tools to execute simulation-based design processes.

Simpack is a general-purpose Multibody Simulation (MBS) software used for the dynamic analysis of mechanical systems.

Isight does not have any specific tool to directly execute and optimize the SIMPACK simulation model. This Q&A article will focus on the procedure of the configuration of Isight workflow through which the user can optimize the Simpack model.

3. How to configure Simpack to use token based licensing with DSLS

Simpack 9.10 (and higher releases) supports DSLS licensing. DSLS licensing is, unlike the earlier licensing model for Simpack, token based. Therefore the Simpack license configuration needs to be configured to use Token based Licensing.

Otherwise, starting a solver in Simpack will generate an error message. This article discusses the procedure to eliminate the error.

4. Error Accessing the Shared Memory of SIMULIA Simpack Job Tables

While running a Simpack job, the user can get an error message stating that the log file cannot be updated or shared memory cannot be accessed for a particular process ID. The issue is primarily caused by a lack of space in shared memory.

This article discusses a way to resolve the issue.

5. Detecting Ill-Conditioning in a SIMULIA Simpack FBI File Super Element

Some indications of super element ill-conditioning in the FBI file:

  • The modal mass matrix has non-diagonal elements greater than 1e-7
  • The mass, center of gravity, and inertia tensor do not match the values in the Finite Element-log files

6. Simpack terminates without prior warning or the display graphics do not appear as expected

Simpack sometimes closes suddenly without any prior warning. This Q&A article discusses the causes and remedies for this issue.

7. Unable to view Simpack documentation

The user is sometimes unable view the Simpack documentation on opening the Simpack Assistant menu. This Q&A article discusses the causes and remedies for this issue.

8. Replacing rigid gears with flexible gears in Gear Wheel Primitive with Simpack Force Element 225 using Abaqus

Simpack can model a gear with a rigid body as well as with a flexible body. Deformation, strain, or stress contours can visualized with a flexible gear body in Simpack.

Global gear stiffness or local gear teeth stiffness can be considered with a flexible gear. This Q&A article discusses the procedure for the same.

9. Using the Simpack COM Interface with VBA scripting

Simpack allows you to use the scripting access functions via the Microsoft COM Interface. With this functionality you can access Simpack through scripts written in any COM-supported scripting language (e.g., Python, VBA, C#, VB.NET, Matlab, C++, etc.).

This Q&A article discusses an illustration script to demonstrate the functionality using an MS Excel VBA Macro.

10. Submitting a SIMULIA Simpack Crash Report

Beginning with Simpack 2019x, an automatic crash report submission tool is available. This error report does not contain any model specific information and all information provided to Simpack will be treated as confidential.

If you are running Simpack on workstations that are not connected to the internet, then a crash report can be submitted manually. The crash report files and a short description on the steps that led to the crash will help the development team in resolving the issue.
