We are pleased to share the presentation "Thermal Validation Study of AdBlue® Melting for Off-Highway Vehicle" by Marco SCOTTI, held at the EuroMed SIMULIA Regional User Meeting on September 14, 2022, with you.
Marco SCOTTI has been working for Same Deutz-Fahr Italia since 2018 and is a Mechanical Engineer responsible for Engine Systems ln-Vehicle Integration.
The department Marco works in deals with the design, development, Integration, and validation of the various Engine Systems (Cooling Systems, DEF Systems, Aftertreatment Systems, Air Combustion Systems, etc.) within the vehicle, with a strong connection to their thermal/acoustic management, an increasingly important matter today to provide a safe, compliant and performing product.
Being a huge supporter of energy efficiency, Marco makes the predictive search for greater safety, comfort, and customer driving experience the center of his daily working life at SDF.
Abstract:
Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is a process where one injects an aqueous urea solution into a diesel exhaust system to reduce NOx emissions. The urea solution known as AdBlue® or Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is stored in a DEF Tank that can freeze under cold weather conditions. Since DEF is unusable while frozen, heaters are installed in the tanks to melt the DEF within the time limit that government regulations impose, allowing immediate use.
In this presentation, we investigate whether a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) based methodology can accurately evaluate the time required in melting DEF for a given DEF Tank and heater coil design for a production vehicle as per the standard testing procedure. Simulations used a coupled methodology with PowerFLOW® as the flow solver and PowerTHERM® as the thermal solver. The flow simulation did require accurate modeling of phase change from solid to liquid for DEF. We observe excellent agreement between test data and simulation and conclude that we can employ a simulation-based approach to validate and certify DEF Systems' design.
