Abstract:
In the food industry, carton-based packages play a crucial role due to their widespread use. Annually, several hundred billion units are produced, which underscores the need for intensive research focused on waste reduction. Paperboard serves as the primary material for these packages, providing both stiffness and strength to the final product. Its key characteristics include orthotropy and ductility.
However, current modeling approaches for paperboard are limited to the elastoplastic regime. To address this limitation, a phase-field model for fracture evolution is proposed. This model aims to describe the mechanical behavior of paperboard until failure occurs. Specifically, it captures the plasticity-driven nature of crack initiation and propagation, allowing us to understand the interplay between plastic and brittle dissipation mechanisms. The model’s predictive capabilities are then compared with complex experimental results.
About the Speaker:
Alessandro Marengo holds a PhD in Structural Engineering from Politecnico di Milano. His primary research focused on developing computational methods for modeling fracture initiation and evolution in ductile orthotropic materials like paperboard.
Currently, Alessandro works as a development engineer in the virtual modeling team at Tetra Pak, based in the Italian site of Modena. In this role, his principal responsibilities involve simulating the forming process of packages in automatic filling machines. He focuses on the interaction between the machine and packaging material to fulfill the customer's high-quality requirements.
