With the electric vehicle market growing by more than 20% annually, traditional players and numerous start-ups racing to gain market share. They are doing this with smaller teams and tighter development schedules. Some of this is due to the apparent simplification an EV offers with fewer moving parts. But this simplicity hides the unseen challenges in bringing all of the physics in the battery and electric drive to deliver a vehicle that performs, lasts, and is efficient.
A successful electric vehicle program requires seamless interaction between multiple disciplines. The latest generation of design solutions enables a team, from the designer to the expert analyst, to efficiently collaborate the design. Several key trends are brought together to make this happen. The first is the use of a unified platform to deliver a common environment that streamlines daily work, provides a “single source of truth” and eliminates delays from communication and traceability. The second is modeling capabilities that enable parametric representation along with detailed design so 1000’s of alternatives can be quickly evaluated. The third is accurate simulation capabilities covering the interacting physics and replacing of physical tests. One example is the combined 3D simulation of electrical, thermal, structural and porous flow in a battery. In practice, these capabilities reduce design iteration times by 50 to 90%.
