Spotlight: What is SLM and Why Do I Need it?

Capture, Manage, and Secure Valuable Simulation Intellectual Property

In a recent article written by Kenneth Wong of Design Engineering entitled, Lost in Simulation, he remarks: "The repetitive nature of simulation points to the possibility of a template-driven approach. By reducing a complex simulation job into a predefined workflow with a series of variables that can be altered on demand, you can make it more accessible to the workforce. With such a process standardizing, the output and the history of simulation jobs become easier to manage."

Dassault Systèmes SIMULIA offers such a solution in the Simulation Lifecycle Management product, but what is SLM exactly? This excerpt from a recent white paper entitled, Simulation Lifecycle Management - More than data management for simulation, written in collaboration with CIMdata helps to explain (complete paper attached):

 

"To bring simulation data and processes into the enterprise lifecycle, leading-edge companies are implementing programs to get their simulation data under control and to better manage their simulation processes and knowledge.These companies seek to include the analysis of intellectual property as part of their product lifecycle management (PLM) implementation. However, bringing simulation into the enterprise is much more than managing simulation data.As traditional PLM routinely captures the form and fit of product designs through digital mockup (DMU), simulation lifecycle management compliments PLM by associating behavioral simulation data and processes with the DMU; in essence offering behavioral-digital mockup (B-DMU). Therefore, a major objective of SLM is to transform simulation from a specialty operation to an enterprise product development enabler that spans many segments of the product lifecycle. A number of SIMULIA customers in varying industries have had a successful experience with the SIMULIA SLM Platform including Frank Popielas, the senior manager for global CAE of Dana Holding Corporation. Frank tells Kenneth that Dana chose SIMULIA SLM because "the software is visually intuitive. It’s in Dassault Systèmes’ 3DLive environment. You don’t have to spend a lot of time learning it. This helps a lot in getting adoption among users across all engineering disciplines.” Frank goes on to say that "looking for information is where you can spend a significant amount of your time in simulation...We’re easily saving 20% of that time by deploying SLM.”

Another success story comes from Kimberly-Clark Corporation of the life science industry which was an early adopter of the software. Chris Pieper of Kimberly Clark advocates: "Simulation Lifecycle Management provides a mechanism to streamline the execution of our simulation processes while offering a standardized procedure that multiple analysts can use-improving the quality and value of our simulation investments."
