Overview
The STAR Global Conference ’13 took place on May 18-19 in Orlando. DS SIMULIA was the only GOLD sponsor for the event among 11 other bronze level sponsors. We had a booth along with looping presentations of our SIMULIA product suite as well as related Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) applications using Abaqus and STAR-CCM+. During the welcome address, a shout out was given to SIMULIA for being a partner and the only GOLD sponsor for the event.
Keynote Address: Failure is not an option!
Gene Kranz, the legendary NASA Flight Control Director who led the effort to save Apollo 13, was this year's Keynote Speaker. He gave an awe-inspiring talk about his life and work in Mission Control, especially during the efforts made to safe the crew of Apollo 13.
STAR-CCM+ v8 Product Launch
Jean-Claude Ercolanelli (Senior VP of Product Management) officially made the STAR-CCM+ v8.02 product release. Live production demonstrations were also carried out to highlight some of the key features, which included:
- Surface modeling in 3D-CAD - CATIA V5 geometry direct transfer to STAR-CCM+
- Surface wrapper tool for Fluid volume extraction
- Co-simulation with AMESIM (LMS)
- Chemical reaction in Eulerian multiphase
- Fluid film compatible with coupled solver
- Part-based meshing – on the fly meshing
- Overset with Lagrangian multiphase – Spray painting application
- Turbulence model – Addition of Dynamic Smagorinsky model
- STAR-CAST add-on module to CCM+ for casting solution
Tracks
There were 4 simultaneous tracks over the course of 2 days such as Aerospace and defense, Powertrain, Heat transfer, Life Sciences, Energy, etc. There were also focused tracks for Sports, FSI, Oil and Gas, Electrification and Academic, which I thought were quite different and interesting.
There was also a separate session dedicated to Academic Panel discussion to talk about “Industry Academia Partnership & CFD in Curriculum”.
Presentations
There were a number of talks on FSI focusing on cosimulation with Abaqus, especially in the FSI track as well as some in the Life Sciences and Powertrain. The presentations that involved Star-CCM+ coupled to Abaqus are listed here:

The conference dinner on March 18th was sponsored by DS Simulia and was followed by the Blues Brothers Revival band, which was quite entertaining. A picture of Jake and Elwood in action can be seen below!
