SIMULIA Academic Forums 2012

Thank you to everyone who attended the 3 UK SIMULIA Academic Forums held in November and December.

The SIMULIA Academic Forums are annual one-day events held at different locations throughout the UK and Ireland. This year the Southern Forum was held at Cranfield University, the Northern Forum at University of Liverpool and a Scottish Forum at University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. The agenda for the day sees two presentations from SIMULIA staff in the morning which this year were ‘SIMULIA in the Academic World’ and ‘SIMULIA Abaqus 6.12 webinar’. Then following lunch, provided by DS UK, a series of student presentations.

During the course of the three events we were pleased to welcome more than 100 Educators, Researchers and Students as well as one or two commercial customers.

At Cranfield University on 26th November, despite miserable weather and extensive flooding throughout the South of the UK, we had 25 attendees and 5 student presentations:-

Development of prototypes for a novel Aircraft Seat against Crash Safety Regulations using ‘Virtual Simulation’ tool – A case study using Abaqus / Standard

Omkar Gulavani - Cranfield University

Modelling of crack growth behaviour in reinforced integral structures

Jeremy Doucet - Cranfield University

A numerical model for calculating the stiffness properties of impact damaged composite laminate subject to in-plane loading

Weiping Li - Cranfield University

Localised rolling to reduce residual stress and distortion after gas metal arc welding on S355 mild steel plates

Luis D. Cozzolino - Cranfield University

A Finite Elements Model to calculate the Stress Intensity Factor in a crack tip located in the joint of two different materials, under mode I loading

Edu Piles Moncholi - Cranfield University

Then SIMULIA’s Stuart Nixon and I took several customer questions in addition to the ones we had answered over lunch!

At the University of Liverpool on December 3rd we had nearly 50 attendees with 4 presenters in the afternoon.

The 4 afternoon presentations were:-

A  case study: Investigation of damage in the cofferdam and development of the solution scheme using ABAQUS

S.Gupta, M. Hasson & D. Sanderson - MMI Engineering

Computational aspects in the efficient treatment of uncertainties of large FE models

Matteo Broggi - University of Liverpool

Shape Optimization using Abaqus and COSSAN-X

Pierre Beaurepaire – University of Liverpool

Stress/strain analysis and contact modelling aspects of interference fitted automotive components

Gabriele Marcuccio – Politecnico di Torino

Then SIMULIA’s Leon Cordingley, Natalie Hamnett and I took questions on a vast range of topics from licensing issues to XFEM!

Our last Academic Forum took place at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow on December 13th. This event was well attended too with over 30 Educators, Researchers and Students. SIMULIA’s Max Leadley-Brown joined me for this event where we also saw 3 excellent papers. Unfortunately one of the presenters, James Ure, was forced to pull out through illness but luckily for us his Supervisor Haofeng Chen stepped in at the last minute to present a ‘flavour’ of the work they are doing.

In addition to this there were two excellent papers:-

The use of Abaqus to model the interaction between bones in the human wrist joint

Magnus Gislasen – University of Strathclyde

Modelling the interaction of Nitinol ring-stents with aortic artery

David Bow/ Martin van Zyl - University of Strathclyde

Development and Implementation of the Abaqus Subroutines and Plug-in for Routine Structural Integrity Assessment using the Linear Matching Method

James Ure - University of Strathclyde & EDF Energy

Max Leadley-Brown then showed a .avi of a data-matching analysis using Abaqus and Isight which generated a lot of interest.

We then fielded questions until the close.

Special thanks go to Jess Nicholson for showing me how to organise these events, also to Stuart Nixon, Leon Cordingley, Max Leadley-Brown and Natalie Hamnett for supporting me at the events.

Most of all thank you to everyone who attended and/or presented at the Forums. I think these events are exciting and very useful to all our academic customers.

Please note that most of the student presentations are available on request. Please email me at clint.DAVIES_TAYLOR@3ds.com for details.
