In Abaqus/Viewer, while selecting section point data to display a contour plot, TOPMOST or MIDDLE or BOTTOMMOST section points refer to the top, middle and bottom of the available locations respectively, and not the total locations, in the section.

For example, if the results are available only at TOP & BOTTOM, the number of available locations is 2. The MIDDLE will correspond to (2 / 2 = 1). So Abaqus/Viewer will show the results corresponding to section_pt = 1, which is the TOP location (indices start from 0).

So in short, the terms top, middle and bottom are with respect to the section points where results are available.
