Abstract

The shielding effectiveness of an automotive battery pack enclosure is a critical requirement in the development of modern battery packs, ensuring compliance with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards. These standards define both the performance criteria and the measurement procedures necessary to evaluate the enclosure’s ability to attenuate electromagnetic interference (EMI). Adequate shielding is essential for regulatory compliance and for the reliable operation of nearby electronic systems. 

This presentation introduces a combined approach using simulation and experimental validation to assess shielding effectiveness. Numerical simulations are applied in the early design stages to identify potential weaknesses and optimize the enclosure before physical prototypes are manufactured, reducing development time and the risk of failure during testing. In parallel, measurement techniques for evaluating shielding effectiveness are presented, including results obtained from the battery pack. These results are compared with simulation data to ensure consistency and accuracy. 

Additionally, a reference enclosure with known characteristics is analyzed to further investigate and validate in-house measurement methods. The proposed approach demonstrates an effective workflow for integrating simulation and measurement, supporting robust design and ensuring compliance with EMC requirements.
