PMF | Electric Motorcycle Battery Pack Cooling Duty Cycle | EuroMed RUM 2025

Abstract

Polimi Motorcycle Factory (PMF ) is the Motostudent team from Politecnico di Milano. It brings together more than 100 students who share the same goal: innovating and pushing performance to the limit.
In the past seven years, electric motorbikes have been a key area of development. This allowed us to gain knowledge on different solutions for the future of sustainable motorsport. Thanks to this experience, the new electric prototype has been designed around high-capacity pouch cells. This type of cell allows for reducing mass and volume, but comes with an important challenge: thermal management.
PowerFLOW and PowerTHERM were crucial to deeply analyze and understand the electrical and thermal behavior of the brand-new battery pack.
PowerFLOW has been the perfect tool to design the cooling ducts of the prototype, allowing a deep understanding of the behaviour of the fluxes impacting on the busbar and cells bodies, while PowerTHERM offered detailed and reliable simulations to study both the thermal and electrical behaviour of the cells. It was coupled with PowerFLOW to perform various simulations of an entire race duty cycle and develop optimized strategies to exploit all the potential of the new racing motorbike.
