On Demand Tech Talk | Modeling of Geothermal Systems at Reservoir Scale

Abstract

Geothermal energy is ubiquitous, abundant, and, unlike solar and wind energies, is not affected by seasonal variations. For these reasons, geothermal energy is increasingly becoming a reliable and scalable source of clean energy in many parts of the world. Enhanced geothermal systems allow us to extract geothermal energy at a commercial scale effectively and economically.  However, the design of geothermal systems is fraught with significant challenges as it requires simultaneous consideration of changes in thermal, mechanical, and pore-pressure fields within the reservoir rock.
In this SIMULIA Tech Talk, you will learn more about the coupled, multiphysics simulation capabilities found in Abaqus for modeling of advanced and enhanced geothermal systems.

The users can leverage these capabilities to

  • Model and evaluate different completion types and designs of geothermal systems.
  • Estimate the energy recovery factor of geothermal systems for different designs, injection rates, and circulating fluids.
  • Examine well interference (in multi-loop geothermal systems) and develop guidelines for well spacing in such systems.
  • Forecast attrition in thermal capacity over the lifetime of geothermal systems.

Highlights:

  • Modeling of lifecycle of geothermal wells - From Drilling to Abandonment
  • Methods for evaluating different completion types and designs in geothermal systems
  • Estimating energy recovery for geothermal systems for different designs, injection rates, and  circulating fluids
  • Examining well interference (in multi-loop designs) and developing guidelines for well spacing in such systems
  • Forecasting attrition in thermal capacity over the lifetime of a geothermal well
