The ODB Reconstruction Tool (ORT) is a tool for SIMULIA Abaqus ODB files, and it can be used to perform the following functions:
- Create smaller ODBs from the original ODB based on user specification of different parameters
- Hide data, which can be achieved by selecting only specific outputs for reconstruction
- Reconstruct an existing ODB to increase animation performance
The tool can be directly applied to any ODB, and can be used to create smaller ODBs from one large ODB with user specified inputs. The inputs may include regions (instances or elsets), steps, frames, outputs and section point. The tool is beneficial in viewing parts of large ODBs that may prove difficult to manipulate in Abaqus/Viewer or view all at once. The original intent of the tool was to improve the performance of large ODBs in Abaqus/Viewer, especially during animation. This is achieved by re-constructing the original ODB and creating a new ODB where the new ODB has improved performance. However, as the Viewer performance has improved in recent years, the original intent has been subsumed by its by-product, which are the first 2 bullet points above. The tool is now overwhelmingly used to create smaller ODBs and hide data in the reconstructed ODB.
With the specified inputs, any given ODB file can be either fully or partially re-constructed; e.g. the original ODB can be re-constructed only with output variable U, just to see animation of the whole model; or, the original ODB can be re-constructed with all outputs but only on specified region(s); or, the original ODB can be fully re-constructed with all outputs and all regions. So, the tool can be used in various ways for constructing smaller ODBs out of one large ODB or fully re-constructing the original ODB. In any case, the performance of the ODB is improved whether it is full re-construction or partial.
In the process of reconstruction, data from the original ODB can be hidden by re-constructing the original ODB with only a few specified outputs and not specifying outputs that are intended to be hidden.
For the sake of performance, the tool ignores any assembly level features like connectors, springs, mass etc. The tool also does not consider section category data like material, thickness etc. The tool internally converts shells into membranes and beams into trusses. For this reason, only one section point number specification is accepted, the results of which are mapped to the integration point of membrane/truss elements. The outputs are mapped from the original ODB as is, and results from integration points, section points, nodes and whole elements are supported. The element results are in the local material orientation if any orientation was defined.
For faster processing, the tool was developed in C++, and currently does not have a GUI interface. The user inputs are taken through an Abaqus style input file in which the format is keywords and data lines. Once the user sets up the input file, the tool can be run from any command prompt or shell. The input file is read from the current working directory from where the tool is being executed.
For each release of Abaqus, the executable will be upgraded. A user guide, sample input file along with the executables is attached.
