Multiphysics Simulation of Aircraft Radome | EuroMed Conf 2026

Abstract

This presentation demonstrates a model-based multiphysics workflow for the design and optimization of aircraft radomes using the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. The objective is to minimize antenna boresight error while satisfying structural requirements related to aerodynamic loading and bird-strike resistance. A fully parametric composite radome model is developed, enabling automatic propagation of design changes across electromagnetic, CFD, and structural simulation environments. Aerodynamic pressures obtained from steady-state RANS analyses are automatically transferred to finite element models for buckling assessment, while bird-strike performance is evaluated using Abaqus Explicit and SPH technology.
Electromagnetic behavior is simulated in CST Studio Suite through a thin-panel representation of composite laminates, allowing efficient evaluation of antenna directivity and boresight error. The integrated workflow is orchestrated through Process Composer, enabling design exploration, multi-objective optimization, and machine-learning-based surrogate modeling. Results highlight the benefits of a unified data model, full CAD-simulation associativity, automation, traceability, and collaborative engineering, significantly reducing design iteration effort while delivering optimized radome configurations that balance electromagnetic and structural performance.

Simone Meduri holds a degree in Structural Engineering from Politecnico di Milano. His passion for numerical simulation led him to pursue a PhD at the same institution, where Simone deepened his expertise and gained hands-on experience with SIMULIA with an internship at Dassault Systèmes's R&D SIMULIA headquarters in Providence, USA.
In his prior professional engagements, Simone specialized in Structural Simulations, Fluid-Structure Interaction, and Vibroacoustics. In 2023, Simone transitioned to the Industry Process Consultant role within the SIMULIA EuroMed Team in Italy. His primary objective is to discern and address clients' needs effectively, thereby enabling them to optimize software use. His areas of focus include MODSIM, Automation and Optimization with Machine Learning, and Fluid-Structure Interaction.

Davide Tallini received the Laurea degree in Telecommunication Engineering from "Sapienza" University of Rome in February 2007. While at the university, his scientific interests focused on electromagnetic theory and applications, specifically scanning antennas and arrays. During his master's thesis, he collaborated with SELEX SISTEMI INTEGRATI in Rome in the design and optimization of a planar phased array for radar applications. At the end of 2007, he joined CST AG as an Application Engineer. Joining Dassault Systèmes with the acquisition of CST, Davide is now, in his current role as EuroMed Technical Manager, responsible for the electromagnetic simulation domain at SIMULIA.
