Meet 2021 SIMULIA Champion Ravish Masti

The 2021 SIMULIA Champions come from different locations around the world, as well as from a variety of industries. Several of them have agreed to share their stories about what led them to using simulation in their field of engineering and how they are tapping the benefits of simulation.

Dr. Ravish Masti is a Senior Technologist with BorgWarner Inc. and he is based out of its Technical Center at Bangalore. He has been in an executive leadership role for several years, with responsibilities encompassing team building, performance excellence of its engineers, robust product development, technical leadership development, competency building and growth, as well as forging a synergistic engagement with the company’s global technical centers. He leads the technical council at the India center, promoting intellectual property growth & protection, technical competency improvement of the engineers through Tech Cafes and training programs, career path development and promoting the company’s cultural values. He has delivered invited guest lectures internally in his company and in external technical forums. He is a recipient of several awards conferred by his company and the external industry ecosystem for his technical leadership. He has published his works in international journals and conferences and contributed to several patents in his fields of work.

While his professional work is filled with numerous responsibilities, Dr. Masti makes time for his many interests outside of work. He enjoys music, yoga, prAnayAma, as well as traveling and visiting places of spiritual and historical significance. He likes spending time with nature, socializing with friends and family, and understanding the spiritual aspects of life.

Dr. Masti received his Ph.D. in NVH domain from the University of Hong Kong and then worked as a postdoctoral research faculty at KU Leuven in Belgium. Prior to pursuing his doctoral research, he worked in the applied research field of experimental aerodynamics at The India Institute of Science, Bangalore. Even while working in the academia, Dr. Masti always had the ambition to work in the industry, wishing to see the practical application of his knowledge and finding solutions to real life engineering problems. He joined in 2005 the Powertrain Systems division of Delphi (now a part of BorgWarner). Delphi, a major user of SIMULIA products, introduced him to using Abaqus. He has been using Abaqus for structural analyses for 17 years and fe-safe for fatigue analyses for 14 years. “Abaqus is a versatile digital simulation tool to handle complex linear and nonlinear mechanics efficiently”, he opined.

Over the course of his professional journey, he has seen CAE simulation becoming profoundly relevant and more inclusive in the product development at BorgWarner and in the industry overall. The simulation technology, he says, has evolved to keep pace with the demands of the industry. “The race to build a more versatile and efficient product requires considering complex functional interactions, and evaluating the design parameters to arrive at a robust and optimal solution at a minimal cost and time. I think this can be more conveniently handled using simulation and thus reducing the dependency on lab tests.”

Dr. Masti’s advice to young engineers is to recognize their strengths and weaknesses. Not to be discouraged by their weaknesses and instead strive to overcome them. He advocates following one’s passion for work and not simply follow the bandwagon. “A sense of fulfillment is deeper by contributing to the progress of our society and domain of work,” he says. “We contribute better with passion for excellence.”

He is a big fan of simulation technology advancement and appreciates that SIMULIA products have helped him in gaining a deeper understanding of several areas of product development, especially in situations where their physical testing were too difficult or expensive. A competitive industry platform demands a deeper knowledge of the product and the right usage of the simulation tool.

He opines, “It’s no exaggeration to say that SIMULIA products have been my companions, metaphorically. They have helped me understand and solve engineering problems. Also influenced my technical advancement and career growth.”

Dr. Masti believes that SIMULIA tools will continue to be useful in developing clean, energy-efficient products and help deliver innovative and sustainable mobility solutions for the automotive market. His own professional goals include contributing to the innovative development of performance-efficient and cost-effective products. He asserts, “A technical leadership role needs to promote an inclusive development of the engineering community. And that we all have a role to contribute to a safe, progressive and happy society.”
