RUM2021 RUM2021-EuroCentral CST Studio Suite EMC
Abstract:
This presentation aims for providing an overview of the high frequency (HF) characteristics of Lithium-ion battery cells. Since most battery-related works available in literature deal with cell dynamics below 10 kHz, there is a significant gap between the increasing interest in highly dynamic battery applications such as fast-switching modern gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC) power converters and the HF knowledge about batteries. The focus of this presentation therefore lies on frequencies above 10 kHz up to 300 MHz. The cell behavior at these frequencies is essential to predict the battery's impact on conducted emissions as well as radiated emissions due to electromagnetic coupling effects among cells. In a combined approach of HF measurements and 3-dimensional battery modeling using CST Studio Suite, high frequency inner-cell-effects such as the skin effect are examined as well as coupling effects among adjacent cells in a battery pack. This helps predicting and ensuring compliance with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) regulations.
