For aerodynamic simulations initially, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods were developed.
With simulation tools reaching higher levels of sophistication, the structural behavior of wind turbines could be simulated using modern multibody simulation (MBS) codes like Simpack. Thus, the next logical step was to link both developments for a more detailed analysis of the structural dynamics of a wind turbine and its components. The resulting approach, coupling fluid-structure computations based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and multibody simulation (MBS), is presented in this article.
