Electrolux Group | Radiated Emissions Investigation of a Serial Digital Interface in a Connected Appliance | EuroMed Conf 2026

Abstract

Electrolux is a global leader in home appliances, developing innovative, connected, and sustainable solutions used by millions of consumers worldwide. As connectivity becomes a standard feature in modern appliances, the electromagnetic behavior of digital interfaces plays an increasingly critical role in ensuring compliance, robustness, and product reliability.
This presentation focuses on a real industrial case involving a connected user interface board developed within Electrolux. The board integrates a microprocessor and a radio module, interconnected through a serial digital communication interface. While primarily intended for digital data transfer, this interface can significantly contribute to radiated emissions, potentially impacting EMC performance.
The work investigates the electromagnetic behavior of this serial interface from a radiated emission perspective, considering both near-field and far-field effects. The analysis combines practical design knowledge with electromagnetic simulation performed using CST Studio Suite, which has been introduced to support EMC analysis during the hardware development phase.
The study highlights typical challenges faced in the development of connected appliance electronics, where compact layouts and mixed-signal environments can increase emission risks.

Davide Fazi is a Senior Hardware Engineer in the Hardware Platform Team at Electrolux. He works on developing electronic platforms for consumer appliances, supporting projects across the full product lifecycle, from early concept evaluation to validation and production.
Davide holds a degree in Electronics Engineering, which provided him with a strong foundation in circuit theory, electromagnetics, and system‑level design. Over the years, he has built solid industrial experience in hardware development, working in multidisciplinary environments and progressively taking ownership of complex electronic design activities.
In his current role, Davide supports the definition and evolution of hardware architectures, contributing through detailed design analysis, schematic and PCB development, and laboratory validation.
His technical focus areas include signal integrity, power integrity, EMC behavior, and hardware robustness, always balancing theoretical considerations with industrial constraints such as cost, manufacturability, and reliability.
More recently, Davide has started using CST Studio Suite as part of his engineering workflow to better understand electromagnetic phenomena related to real product designs. He is applying CST to explore coupling effects, layout‑dependent behavior, and EMC‑related challenges, using simulation as a support tool alongside measurements and hands‑on testing.
As a speaker, Davide shares a practical, learning‑oriented perspective from an industrial hardware engineer, highlighting how CST simulation can be introduced into everyday development activities to improve design understanding and support informed engineering decisions.
