With the smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) modeling technique you can model violent free-surface fluid flows (such as wave impact) and extremely high deformation/obliteration of solid structures (such as ballistics).
Note: This functionality was enhanced in 6.12. While the workflow presented here can still be used in 6.12, you now have the alternative of creating finite elements and having Abaqus automatically convert them into SPH particles. This conversion may occur at the start of the analysis, or during the analysis based on criteria you specify. The conversion option is supported in Abaqus/CAE and provides a much simpler method for generating SPH models. For more information see "Smoothed particle hydrodynamics improvements," Section 5.6 of the Abaqus 6.12 Release Notes.

Extract its contents, and run ws_sph_birdstrike.py before starting the steps shown in the demo. If you get stuck, you can run ws_sph_birdstrike-demoAnswer.py to complete the Abaqus/CAE model as shown in the demo, and/or run completed input file birdstrike-final.inp.
