A SIMULIA e-Learning Resource
Created using Abaqus 6.8, 6.9, and 6.11
You can use free body cuts to display the resultant force and moment transmitted across a selected cross-section of your model.
There are two ways to perform free body cuts in the Visualization module of Abaqus/CAE:
-1- Using the free body toolset
Watch the Free Body Toolset video below to learn the details of how to create element based free body cuts using the free body toolset.
-2- Using the view cuts
Watch the Free Body Data on Planar View Cuts video below to learn about this quick and easy method to display free body data on view cuts. This video also includes a comparison of methods 1 and 2.
This post concludes with a video describing enhancements made in Abaqus 6.11 to both the free body cut methods.
Free Body Toolset
The following narrated video will teach you how to use the free body toolset to create element based free body cuts. This video was produced using Abaqus 6.8; however, the basic procedure has not changed significantly in subsequent releases of Abaqus/CAE.
The following video includes:
- Introduction (0-0:12)
- Demonstration (0:12-7:04)
- NFORC output and display beam profiles (0:12-1:00)
- Beam free body cuts (1:00-3:40)
- Display external loads (3:40-5:00)
- 3D surface cuts (5:00 - 7:04)
This video was created in April 2008 can also be found in the Introduction to Abaqus 6.8 web-based training site.
Free Body Data on Planar View Cuts
The following narrated video will teach you how to display the free body forces and moments transmitted across a planar view cut.
The following video includes:
- Demonstration: how to display free body data on planar view cuts (0-4:00)
- Comparison: view cut vs. Free Body Toolset (4:00-5:42)
This video was created in June 2009 and can also be found in the Introduction to Abaqus 6.9 web-based training site.
Free Body Enhancements in Abaqus 6.11
Several free body plot enhancements were released in Abaqus 6.11, including multiple free body cuts and the extraction of free body force and moment history data.
The following video includes:
- An introduction to free body plot enhancements in Abaqus 6.11 (0-2:08)
- Demonstration (2:08-4:45)
This video was created in July 2012 and can also be found in the Introduction to Abaqus 6.11 web-based training site.
