A SIMULIA e-Learning Resource
Created using Abaqus 6.9 and 6.12
Abaqus/Standard to Abaqus/Explicit co-simulation allows you to capitalize on algorithmic strengths of two analysis program.
Abaqus/Standard strengths include:
- Unconditionally stable
- Allows for larger time increments than Abaqus/Explicit
- Substructuring
- Cost-effective for small-strain analyses
Abaqus/Explicit strengths include:
- Excels at simulating high-speed events
- Extremely robust contact algorithm
Co-simulation provides a cost-effective solution when different model regions can benefit from the respective strengths of the two analysis program.
Narrated Video
This video was created using Abaqus 6.9, however the concepts demonstrated still apply in Abaqus/CAE today.
The following video includes:
- An introduction to Abaqus/Standard to Abaqus/Explicit co-simulation (0-1:13)
- A demonstration of Abaqus/Standard to Abaqus/Explicit co-simulation using a beam model (1:13-12:51)
-- 2:50-3:19 Link and Exclude part instances
-- 3:19-4:32 Abaqus/Standard model
-- 4:32-4:51 Abaqus/Explicit model
-- 4:51-8:34 Co-simulation interactions
-- 8:34-9:42 Co-execution
-- 9:42-12:39 Visualization
This video was produced using Abaqus 6.9 and can also be found in the Introduction to Abaqus 6.9 web-based training site.
Now You Try It!
Download the attached file, CosimulationStdToExp-beam-StepByStep-Abaqus612.pdf and follow the step-by-step instructions to perform two Abaqus/Standard to Abaqus/Explicit co-simulations:
1: Co-simulation analysis without substructuring, which is demonstrated in the video above.
2: Co-simulation analysis with a substructure, in which you will use a substructure for the Abaqus/Standard portion of the simulation.
This exercise has been updated for Abaqus 6.12
