DB Systemtechnik | Practices, experience and challenges with Simpack usage at DB Systemtechnik | EuroCentral RUM 2025

Abstract

At Deutsche Bahn, multi-body simulation (MBS) is almost exclusively conducted by the Department of Rolling Stock Simulation (TT.TVP 25), making it the largest and most representative user of Simpack for vehicle-system-dynamics-related analysis within the corporation. This presentation introduces the fields of expertise and mode of operation of TT.TVP 25 and, arising from these, the experiences in the use of Simpack for the use cases specific to TT.TVP 25 with a focus on the difficulties encountered. The aim is to reveal issues affecting the effectiveness, consistency and credibility of simulations conducted using Simpack, as well as to stimulate exchange of experience and discussion into best practices with the software provider and with Simpack users of different organizations.

Presenter Bio

Dr. Shiping Dongfang has been working at DB Systemtechnik since May 2022 as engineer for multi-body simulation at the Department of Rolling Stock Simulation (TT.TVP 25). His doctoral degree was obtained in August 2021 with the dissertation "Running Dynamic Properties of Small-Radius Railway Wheels" at the Faculty of Rail Vehicles at Technical University of Berlin under the supervision of Prof. Markus Hecht. He majored in Rail Vehicle Engineering at Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) in China, specializing primarily in rail vehicle system dynamics. His master's thesis is on the Pareto optimization of the suspension of a high-speed multiple unit, in which the surrogate modeling technique is adopted to construct the relation between suspension parameters and the vehicle's dynamic performance indexes. His experience with Simpack started in the second year of his undergraduate phase, when Simpack 9.3 was used and taught in class.
