CENIT: EMC shielding and thermal – in search of the best solution | EuroCentral RUM 2023

Electrical devices have to meet electromagnetic compatibility requirements. A shielded housing is often used to reduce radiated interference. A completely closed housing would be optimal with regard to electromagnetic shielding, but would lead to heat accumulation in the device, as the electronic components heat up due to the power loss. Ventilation openings provide a remedy here, but have a negative effect on the electromagnetic shielding. This conflict of objectives can only be resolved by considering both disciplines together with CST Studio Suite. Not only the EMC shielding can be analyzed, but also the thermal cooling, by using the CHT solver, which is an integrated CFD-solver inside CST Studio Suite. A parametric study gives a deep insight into the influencing parameters and helps the designer to find the best solution. For this purpose the advanced DoE and metamodel-techniques from Isight are used. Due to the direct interface to CST Studio Suite, it is easy to automate the parametric study completely. This workflow is shown for an example device with EMC shielding and integrated cooling fan.
