CanmetMATERIALS, Natural Resources Canada - Full-Scale CO2 Pipeline Rupture Simulation using Coupled Eulerian-Lagragian (CEL) in Abaqus

We were honored to have Bruce Williams from CanmetMATERIALS, Natural Resources Canada present at the 2026 SIMULIA Technology Day -Toronto on May 28th.

Abstract:

Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) simulations were performed to capture the full-scale fracture response of a rupturing pipeline. The two-phase response of CO2 was captured using the Tabulated Equation of State (EOS) based on properties predicted by REFPROP. Fracture of the pipeline was modelled using the damage initiation and evolution model within Abaqus. User subroutines for both crack growth and EOS will be briefly discussed. Damping methods will be discussed that reduce numerically induced pressure oscillations. CEL simulations were compared to full-scale CO2 burst tests and could accurately predict the rupture response for a few metres of crack growth with velocities greater than 100 m/s.

Bruce Williams

Research Scientist - CanmetMATERIALS, Natural Resources Canada

Dr. Williams is a Research Scientist at CanmetMATERIALS, Natural Resoures Canada studying deformation and fracture of metal in the pipeline, nuclear, and automotive sectors. His research is about 50% computational and 50% experimental. Recently, he has been studying CO2 pipeline rupture using Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) models that employ Eulerian-Lagrangian schemes within Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software.
