BEST PRACTICE | Multiscale Modeling of FRP - Structural Analysis Engineer

Plastic materials are used everywhere in our daily life for many of their good qualities, including light weight, low cost, durability, corrosion resistance, versatility of manufacturing, and aesthetics. Due to the nature of plastic chemistry, most of plastics have relatively softer mechanical behaviors than traditional metal materials used in industrial manufacturing. To increase the structural stiffness and satisfy design requirements, chopped fiberglass filaments are added to the resin as stiffeners when plastic parts are manufactured using injection molding. The mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced plastics (FRPs) can be characterized based on the single-phase constituents’ properties as well as the orientation of the fibers, the latter of which largely depends on the plastic injection process.

Recently, a 3DEXPERIENCE-based end-to-end workflow has been developed for design the FRP parts. This workflow leverages the multiscale material modeling technology based on the mean-field homogenization (MFH) method as well as the advanced capabilities of plastic injection and structural simulations and process integration and automation offered by the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.

This document provides Best Practices for the Structural Analysis Engineers to help create and execute physical simulations for modeling the material and structural behaviors of FRP parts.

The target audience includes end users of structural simulations in Transportation & Mobility, High-Tech, Home and Lifestyle, Consumer Packaged Goods & Retail, and Life Sciences industries. This document also provides guidance to solution consultants in technical sales and technical support teams within Dassault Systèmes.

It is recommended to read this document along with Multscale Modeling of FRP - Process Methods Developer Best Practice, if you are interested in recreating the workflow.

In this Best Practice, you will learn :

  • Overview of the Workflow
  • Benefits of the Workflow
  • Executing the underlying Simulation Process
  • Configuring the underlying Simulation Process
  • Visualizing the Results
