Augmented mass now available in output

Hello,

Here is a tip that you might find useful if you are an Abaqus/Explicit user. In a model with implicit constraint systems where the nodes of connector element have masses that are highly mismatched (differ by more than three orders of magnitude), Abaqus/Explicit adds mass to the connector element node that has the smaller mass to overcome convergence problems (due to the ill-conditioned coefficient matrix). In the releases 6.11-1 and earlier there is a warning message in .STA file which state that nodal masses are highly mismatched and a small amount of mass is added to overcome convergence difficulty.

For quite some time many Abaqus/Explicit users were interested in knowing the “actual amount” of augmented mass. The good news is, starting release 6.12-1 there is an additional warning message in the .STA file that prints the amount of total augmented nodal masses in the form of percentage of total model mass that is being added. Attached below is a screenshot of .STA file of such an analysis with release 6.12-1 to demonstrate this enhancement.

All the best,

Gajendra
