Additive Manufacturing Simulation- Instructional Series

SIMULIA has started Additive Manufacturing Simulation – Instructional Series. The purpose of instructional series is to showcase how you can setup an entire Additive Manufacturing build simulation with ease on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.

This easy-to-use instructional series is a comprehensive introduction to defining and performing additive manufacturing process simulations on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. This series of videos teaches you how to design components for additive manufacturing. Further, you will learn how to create supports and generate slicing and scan paths for the build part. In addition, it teaches you how to design material to the part, define laser paths as heat loads, and model the cooling effects during the build process in the context of thermal-mechanical simulations.

These have been developed by our Additive Manufacturing group,and enhanced with customer experiences and feedback since the first launch of Print to Perform in 2017.


The Additive Manufacturing solution offered on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform consists of multiple components – Functional Generative Design, Process Planning, and Process Printing and Post Printing operations:

  1. Functional Generative Design focuses on generating organic shapes using topology optimization.
  2. Process Planning focuses on build planning, part orientation optimization, support structures, scan path strategies and machine format outputs.
  3. Process Printing focus on setting up a build simulation using the information from the process-planning component. The simulation is an open framework that works out of the box for a powderbed simulation and is highly customizable to accommodate other industry processes in Additive Manufacturing. In addition, one can also simulate for recoater interference during build and crack propagation.
  4. Post Printing operations include build plate and support removal, heat treatment, in-service loading, negative shape compensation, deviation analysis and many more.
