On Thursday, February 1st was organized our second SIMULIA User Meeting and Conference (SUMC), in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Like last year, this event has been hosted at Khalifa University (formerly The Petroleum Institute).
We had around 45 attendees, from Academics (among them Delft University of Technology, from the Netherlands, Khalifa University, New York University Abu Dhabi) and Industries (ADNOC, Baker Hughes a GE Company, Etihad Airways Engineering or Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation).
After a warm welcome message from Dr Steve Griffiths, VP for Research at Khalifa University, expressing simulation need and aim in the Academics, Dr Fahad Almaskari outlined the conference program. Mr Edouard Lété introduced SIMULIA brand and its promise.
Then Mr Jean-Daniel Lecuyer exposed Fitness For Service presentation for Oil&Gas equipments. I showed last progress of Additive Manufacturing Print to Perfom right after.
Compared to 2017, this second edition has received seven customer presentations.
Mr Mohamed Amine Abichou, from LaunchTech company, talked about numerical simulation challenges in Oil&Gas industry.
Dr Cor Kasbergen, from Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands), presented an interesting paper on influential factors on tire-pavement skid resistance.
Mr Jérémy Riou, from Baker Hughes, a GE Company, made a global overview of numerical modeling technique to solve Geomechanical challenges in petroleum industry.
Ms Mariam Al Dhaheri, from Khalifa University, with the support of Strata Manufacturing, talked about composite structures and issues related to curing and spring-back deformation.
Dr Farrukh Hafeez, Professor in Mechanical Engineering Department of Khalifa University, presented two papers, one about assessment of heat partition during trimming of fibrous composites, and one dealing with modal analysis of a piezoelectric transducer.
Finally, Dr Jamal Ahmed, Professor in Mechanical Engineering Department of Khalifa University, closed the day with a presentation on the study of melting phenomenon in Friction Stir Welding of High-Density Polyethylene.
As you can see, Research and Industrial Applications in various domains, from oil&gas to composites, are widely spread in the UAE. A user community is growing, with simulation as a key pillar. We are keen to help this community grow. SIMULIA, and Abaqus as a flagship product, provides technology to enable that.
Most of the presentations are available to download.
I would like to warmly thank all contributors, presenters, users who made this conference possible.
Hopefully, let's meet you next year for the third edition.
