A new material model for paperboard was added to the Abaqus solvers in 2025x FD01. This model is based on work by Xia, Boyce and Parks (2002) and the follow-on work by Tomas Andersson (2006). This material model has been added to the 3DExperience Material Calibration App as of R2026x FD01. This material model is an anisotropic elastic-plastic model with decoupled in-plane versus through thickness behavior.
Here is an example of the Abaqus .inp file keyword interface:
These material parameters come from page 48 of Tomas Andersson's Master's Thesis. (TFHF5115.pdf in zip file). These parameter values are used as the default initial values in the Calibration App.
The paperboard model is available in Numerical and FE modes
The image below is the synthetic test data (9 datasets) with the known answer material model. This 3dxml file is in the zip file below, but you would need to use a 3DExperience R20206x FD01 to open it. This 3dxml file was saved from R428, snapshot 210482 on 10-22-2025
The zip file below contains:
- A nice presentation of the material model prepared for the 2025 RUMs (pdf file)
- Thomas Andersson's Masters Thesis (pdf file)
- A material model snippet as .inp file
- A .3dxml file with the synthetic test data and know material model.
- The synthetic test data ; 1 .xlsx file of Simple Shear data and 6 .csv files of Uniaxial data.
