  • Panel Discussion: Shared Data and Interoperability - Are African miners doing enough?
  • Presenter: David OSBORNManaging Director, Dassault Systèmes, South Africa
  • Date, Time & Location: Monday, 05 February |  13:10 - 13:55 PM | Innovators Stage
  • About: Sharing data can lead to a breakthrough in how Africa manages health and safety in its mines and its broader value chain. However, many remain reluctant to share data, fearful that they will give a competitive advantage to a rival company. Couple this with interoperability issues of dealing with multiple different technology systems, data can become useless. When it comes to health and safety, it is no longer about competitive edges, but human lives. What does Africa need to do to improve in this area?
    • Shared data and health and safety, why the lack of transparency?
    • What can Africans learn from a European company’s data handling?
    • How do we overcome the challenges of interoperability created when using multiple tech systems?

About the Event:

Since its inception in 1994, Mining Indaba has grown from a small conference to one of the most highly anticipated events in the industry, welcoming mining professionals from all over the world. The event is solely dedicated to the successful capitalisation and development of mining interests in Africa, with a unique and widening perspective of the African mining industry. From connecting mining companies with leading investors to provide a platform for important industry discussions, supporting the long-term economic and sustainable growth across the continent.

In 2024, the overarching theme is 'Embracing the power of positive disruption: A bold new future for African mining' to encourage and support the needed change and disruption the African mining industry needs to move forward.

The industry is at the early onset of disruption, with advancements in technology, health and safety, environment, and exploration to name a few. It's time to put the real issues on the agenda - outlining the true investment inhibitors and how these ultimately feed into new opportunities.
