The European Green Deal program has announced the coming of the Sustainability Area starting next year with the release of a “regulatory tsunami” that would probably change a lot European Economic Area to become first Net Carbon region by 2050.with an intermediate step on 2030 with 55% net reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Main pieces implementing such objectives are:
- the Circular Economy Action Plan - CEAP and Sustainable Europe Investment Plan (2020);
- the Chemistry Strategy for Sustainable - CSS (2020);
- the Sustainable Product Initiative - SPI including revisions of
- the EU Battery Directive with the new “Battery Passport” (2022-Q1) and
- the EU EcoDesign Directive with the new “Product Digital Passport - DPP (2022-Q1).
The new French law on Anti-Wasting and Circular Economy - AWCE, voted on 10 February 2020 with newly published decrees, appears to foreshadow what would come from EU as France would like to lead EU on this sustainability domain. This law contains 130 articles and would drastically change the rules when putting products in France market, in particular including the following articles among others coming into force on 1st January 2022.
AWCE, Article 13.I - In order to improve consumer information, producers and importers of waste-generating products shall inform consumers by means of marking, labelling, display or any other appropriate method, their environmental qualities and characteristics, including the incorporation of recycled material, the use of renewable resources, durability, compostability, repairability, reuse, recyclability and the presence of hazardous substances, of precious metals or rare earths, consistent with European Union law.
AWCE, Article 13.II - Any person placing products on the market for consumers containing substances , including the French Health and Safety Agency for Food and Environment qualifies endocrine disruption properties as proven or presumed to be available to the public electronically, in an open format, easily reusable and usable by an automated processing system, for each of the products concerned, information to identify the presence of such substances in these products.” This obligation also applies to certain categories of products presenting a particular risk of exposure, for substances whose endocrine disrupting properties are described as suspected.
Both articles establish that producers or importers shall communicate publicly on products environmental qualities and characteristics and presence of endocrine disruptors on a dedicated web page AND with the mean of Application Programming Interface (API). This API mean is a completely new duty for companies!
Dassault Systèmes already offers 3 main applications addressing these sustainability requirements:
- ENOVIA Materials Compliance Management application with Materials Compliance Manager (MCM) role to track hazardous substances in Parts and Products; this apps is available only on premise and on legacy EBOM BOM (made of Parts) till R2024x.
- SolidWorks Sustainability module integrated with SolidWorks CAD BOM implementing an integrated Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tool with predefined environmental indicators; this module is available in WS Desktop
- ENOVIA Sustainability Assessment application with Sustainability Innovation Manager (KSM-OC) role, implementing an LCA tool onto the Unified Product Structure (UPS) BOM.
And for sure, all other apps that can be used to increase Material and Energy Efficiency and to contribute to a more circular economy.
