Sectoral Requirements collection for ISO 82474 project on Material Declaration

Sectors and their manufacturer companies are subject to more and more regulator pressure to track hazardous substances in their products. EU RoHS/ELV/REACH regulations and similar other ones in California, China, Korea... are driving manufacturers to put in place a Material Declaration collection process within their supply chain to comply with those duties.

There are several Material Declaration data exchange standards on the market that create confusion: IMDS/CAMDS, IPC-1752, IEC 62474, IPC-1754... The ISO 82474 project intents to develop an harmonized Material Declaration data exchange standard for all sectors to increase interoperability between sectors, data quality and reduce cost to support those regulations. This project has started on 2021 April and this is now time for each sector to promote their specific business requirements to this project.

ISO 82474 standard development starts from the existing IEC 62474 Edition 2.0 and their Data eXchange schema DX8.10 supporting several Material Declaration business cases:

Trade associations representing sectors other than Electrical & Electronic Equipment (EEE) should participate to this project and communicate their requirements; for instance:

  • the Automotive sector has already presented their needs: being able to establish Full Material Declaration against their sectoral substances list, GADSL, with considering Confidential Business Information (CBI) with a maximum of 10%;
  • the Aerospace & Defense sector would promote work done last year with the IPC-1754 standard in particular to report presence of substances in products without any quantity, also process chemicals.
