Introduction to 'IP Protection and Export Control Classification' Application

Introduction

Intellectual property (IP) protection and export control helps companies safeguard their innovations, maintain competitiveness, and fulfill legal obligations in the global marketplace.

IP protection and export control are crucial aspects of business operations and compliance, particularly for companies engaged in international trade or dealing with sensitive technologies.

  1. IP Protection refers to the safeguard of the company's intellect from unauthorized use or exploitation.
  2. Export control refers to government regulations and measures designed to restrict the export of certain goods, software, technologies, and information for reasons related to national security, foreign policy, or protection of trade interests.
These regulations aim to prevent sensitive items from falling into the wrong hands.

The 2024X FD01 release introduced a new dashboard application (widget), called 'IP Protection and Export Control Classification', which is available with both roles:

  • 'IP Security Manager' (IPS)
  • 'IP Controlled Access' (IPA)

It provides a new user experience to create and view the security libraries, classes, exceptions and security rules in a Dashboard environment, as well as classify and declassify content.

Note: Although the 'IP Protection and Export Control Classification' app is available in both roles, the available capabilities vary depending on the role.

Main capabilities of the 'IP Protection and Export Control Classification' app:

  • Create and manage IP Protection and Export Control libraries and classes
  • Record security rules for IP Protection and IP & Security Control classes.
  • Create and manage exceptions for IP Protection and IP & Security Control classes.
  • Select or change physical location

Working Process:

Create and manage IP Protection and Export Control libraries and classes

Two types of libraries and classes are available:

  • IP Protection - focuses on safeguarding intellectual property rights.
  • Export Control - focuses on complying with regulations governing the export of goods, services, and technologies.

Record security rules for IP Protection and IP & Security Control classes

'IP Protection and Export Control Classification' app includes a robust rules engine that allows organizations to define security rules to apply access restrictions.

  • The security rules are classified by:
    • Citizenship
    • Country-of-birth
    • Physical Location
    • Organization
    • Skill
  • Once the security rule is created, the IP Security Manager can add expressions to define the rule.

  • Then, the IP Security Manager can associate classes with the security rule, to apply the security rule to the content classified in the selected classes.

Create and manage exceptions for IP Protection and IP & Security Control classes

Exceptions to security rules refer to circumstances where an organization temporarily deviates from its established security rules due to a specific reasons or conditions.

To achieve that:

  • Define the period of time the exception is valid
  • Associate classes to the exception, to determine the content to which we allow access.
  • Define Authorizations to determine who can access the classified content using the exception.

Change the maturity states of libraries, classes, security rules and exceptions

  • Libraries, classes, security rules and exceptions are created in ‘Inactive’ state
  • Once the library definition is complete, you should change its maturity to ‘Active’ state to make it available to others.
  • IP Security Manager can promote the library to the ‘Archived state when it is no longer needed.
