Digital Continuity between Product Data and Project Tasks

Let us consider four different facets of a project:

1) Requirements - why are we executing a project and its tasks

2) Product Data - what the project delivers as an output - deliverables or artifacts of the project

3) Schedule - when the project tasks need to be completed

4) People - who needs to complete the project tasks

Typically all this project information is managed in different enterprise systems - each in its own silo. This leads to a lot of inefficiency when executing a project. While working with our customers, it has been reported that up to 30% of a project team's time is spent on non-value added activities. Consider a designer earning 100K USD each year and 30% of the designer's time is spent on non-value added activities. This can quickly increase project cost. The process is inherently error prone as data is updated in different systems and manually reconciled. All of this brings down the productivity of the project team.

With the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, all of the project facets are managed together in a single database, connected with a business process. This not only eliminates the inefficiencies of managing this information in different enterprise systems, but it also brings the added value of invisible governance and robust project analytics.

Data driven and file based CAD connected to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform not only provides efficiency in managing engineering data and downstream consumption of this data but also exposes project management within the designer's environment. Designers can view assigned project tasks, priorities, and due dates within the design environment. After understanding what needs to be done and when it needs to get done, designers can now focus on completing the design (the job they have been hired to do). They can easily connect engineering designs as deliverables on project tasks within the design environment. Designers can update the progress made and communicate with the project team all within the designer's environment. There is no longer a need to complete the design work, then update another system to state that the work has been completed. Additionally, the project team doesn't have to manually follow up with designers to understand task progress, then look at another system to understand product data status and manually reconcile all of this to determine true progress made on the project.

By linking design data as deliverables to project tasks right within the design environment, the non-value added activities of manual updates (follow-up, reconciliation of product & project status and reporting) are all eliminated. This improves the designer's productivity as well as the productivity of the project leader and ultimately, the entire project team.

The project team shifts from task driven to deliverables based project management. The below video illustrates the value of managing projects on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.
