Adding Weightage to Project Tasks for More Accurate Assessment of the Progress

Not all the fingers on a palm have the same length. Similarly, not all tasks in a project have the same weightage. Some projects are more critical than others. Typically, the critical tasks are given a longer duration to complete than the less crucial ones.

Presently, when a project manager is reviewing the progress of a project, the status of each phase changes as the individual work break-down structure (WBS) tasks under that phase are completed. Assume that there are four tasks under a Phase in a project. When the first task gets completed, the Phase shows a progress of 25%. Likewise, when all tasks are completed, the Phase shows a progress of 100%.

While it is common practice to gauge a project's progression by measuring the overall progress of individual tasks contained, in reality, not all tasks have equal weightage within a project. Some tasks are a lot more crucial than others in determining the overall progress of the project.

Let's again, consider the the example above with the four tasks.  One task may be more crucial and may require more effort to complete the project than the other tasks.  Therefore, a project manager would benefit from adding weightage to this task.

Many customers have felt the need for such a feature to distinguish individual tasks by their weightage. Starting with R2020x FD02, there is an enhancement that addresses this need.

In the video demo below, the Design Phase has four tasks. One task has a weightage of 50%, while another task has the least weightage of 5%. You’ll notice that when the task with least weightage is completed, the Phase shows a progress of only 5%. Then as the task with 50% weightage is completed, the overall status progresses to 55%.

If a project has many sub-projects, it is possible to give weightage to each of those sub-projects in a similar fashion to giving weightage to tasks.

We hope that the users will appreciate this cool enhancement. If you like it, please give a thumbs up!
