Troubleshooting Tool: DraftSight Cannot Start

Several users have reported that DraftSight crashes at startup. We were able to identify the cause. This issue happens in V1R3 and V1R3.1, but is fixed in the next April V1R4 release.

Symptom

When starting DraftSight, the splash screen shows and the DraftSight window appears briefly, then DraftSight closes with no error message.

Cause

Users had enabled the options “Apply current filter to Layers toolbars” in the Layers Manager the last time they used DraftSight.

Solution

Here is a solution which will retain the user’s settings.

1. Locate the profile.xml file in:

  • For Windows 7/8/Vista: C:\\Users\\User_name\\AppData\\Roaming\\DraftSight\\1.2.26X\\Profiles\\__unnamed profile__
  • For Windows XP: C:\\Document and Settings\\User_Name\\Application Data\\DraftSight\\1.2.265\\Profiles\\__unnamed profile__

The folder 1.2.265 refers to V1R3.1, it would be 1.2.263 for V1R3

2. Right mouse click on it and select Open with Notepad.

3. Then search for the variable responsible for this setting by pressing simultaneously the Ctrl and the F keys on your keyboard.

4. On the Find dialog box enter “applyfilter” in the ‘Find what’ field. Click on Find Next to launch the search.

5. Look for the result showed in the screenshot below and when you find it close the Find dialog box:

It shows:

6. Change the value from “1” to “0”.

Note: if the variable was set on 0 already, obviously the root cause would be different.

7. Save the profile file and close Notepad.

DraftSight will now start.
