Scaling linestyles

Linestyle scaling may be global (affecting all lines) or individual (affecting only a specific line).

Global scales are set through the menu by selecting FORMAT > LINESTYLE and setting one or more of “Global scale”, “Entities scale”, and checking or unchecking “Scale based on sheet units”. You may have to experiment with these to get the results you need:

Global scale: Scales the LineStyles so they fit to the units of measurement. This affects all lines in the drawing enlarging or reducing the original size of broken linestyle segments when set to values other than 1. This has an immediate affect on ALL line-styles in the drawing and affects both model space and sheet layouts (sheet space).

Entities scale: Sets a LineStyle scale factor for new entities relative to the general LineStyle scale factor. When set to a value other than 1 its value is factored with the global scale to alter the size of segments in a single linestyle. This affects only the linestyles of those lines that are drawn after it is changed.

Scale based on sheet's units: Forces LineStyles to be drawn at the same scale as the Viewport scale. Clear the option to scale LineStyles equally in the model and Sheet. This has a visible effect only when the sheet layout is previewed or printed at a scale other than 1:1.

Use this exercise to help get a better understanding of how these work together:

Open a new drawing.

Load two line styles: FORMAT > LINESTYLE > LOAD and select any two line-styles while holding down the CTRL key then press OK. This will add them to the list of available line-styles.

If “Show parameters” is visible select it to expand the window.

Select one of the new line-styles and press “Activate”. Its name should now appear in the “Linestyle control” box under the menu.

Draw a 3000 units long line in model space sloping upward to the right.

Use VIEW > ZOOM > FIT to display its whole length then zoom in until the segments are easily seen.

Use FORMAT > LINESTYLE to set the global scale to a smaller value and select OK (or press ENTER) and observe the effect on the segments of the line. Repeat with a larger value than 1. Play with other values if you wish before continuing further. Repeat finally with the value set again to 1.

Zoom fit the line so that it is all within the drawing area.

Open a sheet layout tab.

Activate the viewport by double-clicking inside its boundary.

Zoom fit the model view so that the whole line is visible and use the “Misc”, “Display locked” option to lock the viewport model display against accidental size change when zooming.

Double-click outside the viewport to return to the sheet layout tab.

Draw a line across the viewport sloping downward to the right. The previous line is in model space and now inaccessible. The new line is in the sheet layout and only accessible while working there.

Right-click the sheet tab ans select PRINT... Select the “Print preview” button and note that the lines are shown with the same segment sizes as they did on the sheet layout tab.

At this stage you may wish to actually print the drawing to see the final result – otherwise … … ...

Cancel out (red crosses) until the sheet layout again has focus.

Use FORMAT > LINESTYLE and uncheck the “Scale base on sheets unit” box.

Recheck the print preview as before noting that this time the line segments are shown with different sizes just as they originally appeared in the model and on the layout.

It should be clear that the check box controls the way lines from the model are shown in print preview and the print out. It is probably preferable (but not essential) to keep this checked.

Now use the second linestyle to draw another line similarly to the first in both model space and paper space. The model can be accessed either directly through the viewport after activating it or by returning to the model tab.

Use FORMAT > LINESTYLE and change the value of the “Entities scale” to a smaller and then a larger value than 1.

Note that in each case there appears to be no change in the line segment appearance in either the drawing or print preview – examine both!

With the “Entities scale” value set greater than 1, draw a third pair of lines one in each space.

Now draw another pair of similar lines one in each space.

Note that the new lines have their segments longer than the original in proportion to the enlargement factor used.

Now find “Line scale” in the Properties palette.

Watch how its value changes according to the settings used to draw each of the lines by selecting each in line turn in each space in the order in which they were drawn. (Hint: press ESC before each selection so that only one line is selected each time.)

Note that each line has retained the entity scale at which it was originally drawn.

In the properties palette, with a line selected, change the line scale value and watch the effect on the linestyle. This then is an alternative way of controlling the entity scale individually for the selected line.

Repeat the exercise and/or keep playing until you understand what is happening.
